GENERAL PRESENTATION

In general, the aim of the research carried out at the IBCP is the study of proteins in their biological context. This research encompasses both intra- and extracellular proteins from prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms, with special emphasis on their biosynthesis, maturation and interactions. The goal is to elucidate the spatial organisation and biological activities of these proteins, and to understand structure-function relationships at the molecular level.

Achieving this goal requires the setting up of several different experimental and theoretical approaches, as well as the coordinated and complementary activities of several groups, including both French and international researchers. In bringing about this organisation, the IBCP helps its groups to :

  • concentrate skills and resources in order to maximise efficiency

  • stimulate cross-disciplinary research at the interface between molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, chemistry, biophysics, biotechnology, structural biology and bioinformatics

  •  catalyse collaborative projects and new areas of research

  •  increase technical infrastructure by the sharing of expensive and sophisticated state-of-the-art equipment

  • provide a research centre to attract high quality researchers

  • open up collaborations with other research organisations and industrial partners at regional, national and international level
